How to close empty Solana token accounts and recover the rent
If you trade meme coins, your wallet probably holds dozens of empty token accounts, each locking a small SOL deposit. Closing them sends that SOL back to you. Here is what it means and how to do it safely.
What is a token account?
On Solana, your wallet does not hold tokens directly. Each token you receive gets its own token account, linked to your wallet. To exist, an account must hold a rent deposit in SOL: roughly 0.0015 to 0.002 SOL per account.
Why empty accounts still lock SOL
When you sell or send all of a token, its account stays open with 0 tokens and the deposit still inside. After a few months of trading, 100 empty accounts can lock 0.15 to 0.2 SOL.
Which accounts are safe to close?
- Accounts that hold exactly 0 tokens
- Accounts your wallet owns and is allowed to close
- Not frozen accounts, and not Token-2022 accounts with withheld transfer fees or confidential balances (the network refuses to close those)
How to do it with MemeKiln
Open Reclaim SOL, connect your wallet and let the free scan count your empty accounts. You see the SOL recovered, the 15% fee and what comes back to you before signing. Approve in your wallet: about 20 accounts are closed per transaction, and the SOL lands in your wallet seconds later.
Is it reversible?
Closing is permanent, but nothing is lost: an empty account holds no tokens. If you receive the same token again later, a new account is simply opened at that time.
Things to watch out for
- Never share your seed phrase. A legitimate tool only asks you to approve transactions in your wallet
- Read what your wallet shows before approving: closing accounts, the fee transfer and nothing else
- Be wary of sites that promise “free money” or airdrops: recovering rent only gives back SOL that was already yours
Reclaim SOL
The scan is free and only reads public data. Nothing happens until you approve in your wallet.
